“Newcomer” refers to any students and their families who have recently arrived to a new country. Schools play an important role in helping newcomers adapt to their new home. These newcomers bring many strengths and assets that can be harnessed to support them; however, newcomers are also confronted by many barriers, including the challenge of accessing academic content while still developing English proficiency. Educators need support in using research-based practices, policies, and procedures to meet the needs of our newcomer students and families.
